“Now, it’s your turn. Change the references to reflect that it’s you who needs the assistance.”

She hesitated at first but gathered enough courage to try. “This is crazy.” Twirling her wand as the professor showed her, she repeated the words:

Earth, air, fire, and water.

Hear my plea.

I ask that you assist me to direct energy to my desired aims.

Look with favor upon me as the chosen one;

Help me in the coming days and years.

I ask this with mercy and favor upon me.

The symbols that looked like slender triangles turned a beautiful blue color as white smoke rose around the edges.

“What’s happening? What am I feeling? This is different than anything I’ve ever experienced before!” Celeste felt as if she was made of nothing but pure light and air, and slowly she was being lifted off the floor.

“Your power is being amplified for the first time without Arabelle. That’s what you’re feeling,” Professor Tidwell observed with pride.

Celeste took two cautious steps backward. The need to sit down or lean against something for support overtook her body. She struggled to find the right words to convey the depth of her feelings. “How is this possible? I’ve barely been able to perform simple magic all year, though the others pick it up easily. But here, now, I can feel my magic resonating throughout my body and soul.”

Excitement shone in the professor’s eyes. “That’s because you’re a special child with extraordinary abilities. You didn’t want to believe in yourself and your abilities, but I knew it was in there if I could just bring it to the surface.”

“Well, I’m glad you had faith, because I have none. In fact, I had no idea what was possible with magic. It’s funny; Jayce told me I had more power than I realize too.”

“This is just a small sample of what’s out there,” the professor expressed excitedly, “and there’s so much more to learn. I’m going to teach you how to enter a certain part of the spirit realm.”

“The spirit realm? Shouldn’t we take a break after what I just learned? You don’t want my head to explode today, do you?” Celeste laughed at the image she conjured up in her head.

He laughed. “You won’t be on overload, I’m certain of it. In fact, you’re stronger and brighter than you know.”

“The spirit realm. Tell me what that means.” Celeste’s curiosity and confidence had been piqued, and now she was ready to take this on too.

Professor Tidwell explained, “The soul realm serves as a buffer between the lower and higher spiritual realms. It’s a place for spiritual entities who’ve discarded their physical bodies and moved into one of these realms.”

Celeste struggled to follow. “So, I’m not dead, which is what I assume ‘discarding your physical body’ refers to?”

“No, you’ve not passed, but there’s a way for living beings to enter. That’s what you’re about to attempt.”

Okay, this guy is nuts. I don’t know what he’s trying to do to me, but that’s the craziest thing I’ve heard!

“Seriously? You’re telling me I’ll be traveling into the spirit realm?”

He nodded his head as if it was no big deal.
